With 2015 coming to a close, I have decided to set some wellness goals for 2016. I want to be more nurturing to myself, and work on improving my health. This doesn’t just include physical health, but mental and spiritual health too.
So many people tend to look at the New Year as a time to make resolutions to “lose weight”, “go to the gym more”, “finally fit into a bikini”, etc. While it is important to set goals in order to stay motivated, it can be difficult to follow through with them. In fact, I cannot say that I’ve ever kept a New Year’s resolution. This is why I think that setting health-oriented goals which encompass all aspects of our wellbeing is so important. By improving each aspect of our own health, we can be stronger, more patient and have more energy for the special people in our lives.
In the past, I’ve always set fitness goals based on aesthetics. I wanted to look toned and be able to wear a bikini. However, I have resolved to change that mindset.
In September, I fell and dislocated and fractured my knee, and tore my patello-femoral ligament. I ended up needing surgery, and let me tell you, being incapacitated with three little ones is NOT fun!
I thought my husband would lose it. Some days we both did. However, I learned a valuable lesson from this experience. I need to be thankful for all of the “little” things I take for granted on a daily basis, such as mobility.
Now at Christmastime, I am thankful to be driving, and walking without crutches or a brace. I am actually thankful that I can do the laundry again!
My 2016 Wellness Goals
So my goals for 2016 are to restart my strength training, that has been on hold for the last several months, so I can strengthen my body and prevent further injuries. I will recommit to eating unprocessed, whole foods, and avoiding gluten, most dairy and sugar, so that I have energy to play with my kids and feel good. I will really try carve out time everyday for myself to pray and practice self-care. This could mean taking a nice bath, going for a walk outside, or reading a book. Something that relaxes me and nourishes the soul.
Will you join me? I encourage you to set a wellness goal. Not for aesthetics, or to please others, but to truly make you the healthiest version that you can be in 2016. Get your family involved!
